What is Title I?
Title I is a federally funded program that provides supplemental academic support and extended learning opportunities to low achieving children in high poverty schools. The purpose of Title I is to ensure that all children have a fair and equal opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and achieve proficiency on Maine's challenging academic standards.
Auburn's Title I Schools
The Auburn School Department offers federally funded Title I programs in five elementary schools:
All five schools have achieved Schoolwide Program status through a rigorous application process that includes the creation of a planning team, an in-depth needs assessment, and the development of a schoolwide improvement plan. Schoolwide programs promote high academic achievement through the following components: a clear focus on learning; high expectations for students/staff; environment focused on learning; strong leadership; curriculum, instruction, assessment aligned with standards; high-quality professional development; a collaborative spirit and collaborative structures; meaningful parental involvement; and a commitment to continuous review and improvement.
Assessment Information for Parents
The
Auburn School Department utilizes all assessment data to help
inform our practices at the district, school, classroom and individual
levels for our students. Although we encourage students and parents to
participate fully in our assessment program, it is important to note
that parents/guardians may opt their child out of state testing. If you
are interested in doing so, please reach out to your child's principal
to make this request in writing.
Family Engagement
The
Auburn School Department recognizes that a child's education is a
responsibility shared by the school, the student, and the family.
Research shows that the involvement of parents in their child's
education increases student achievement. Schools and parents must work
as partners if the school system is to meet its goal of educating
students effectively. Each Title I School has a School-Parent Compact that outlines responsibilities of the students, families and school staff.

Parent Right to Know
Parents have the right to request the professional qualifications of their child's teacher and to request and receive information regarding state and local assessments, including the right to opt their child out of testing. Click here for more information.
ESEA Grant
The Auburn School Department accepts funding through the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965. In accordance with ESEA, the Auburn School Department is required to provide reasonable opportunity for public comment on the consolidated application and consider such comment prior to submission of the application. Below is a summary of proposed 2024-2025 grant expenditures and the link to a feedback form.
Title I ($1,250,321.20)
Title I funds provide supplemental academic support and extended learning opportunities to children in Title I schools.
In Schoolwide Programs, funds are used to support the overall improvement of the school. Title I funds are used to provide programming and resources for students at East Auburn, Park Avenue, Sherwood Heights, Walton, and Washburn. Title I funds pay for interventionists, books/materials, staff professional development and attendance support. In addition, Title I funds are allocated for homeless students and family engagement activities.
Title II ($240,960.49)
Title II funds are used to provide professional development for teachers and administrators. Local private schools receive a percentage of the overall Title II allocation for professional development projects. Auburn's share of Title II funds are used for professional development projects in literacy, math & content areas and teacher induction programming.
Title III ($24,452.72)
Title III funds support programs and resources for students who are learning English as a second language. Title III monies are used to support high-quality instruction, materials/supplies, staff development, and family engagement activities.
Title IV ($127,886.87)
Title IV funds are used to support a well-rounded education, safe and healthy students, and the effective use of technology. Local private schools receive a percentage of the overall Title IV allocation. Auburn's share of Title IV funds is used for curriculum enhancement (STEM/Unified Arts), attendance support, and technology in our Title I elementary schools.
